While we still must concern ourselves with the possibility of developing a blood or immune-system related genetic disease there are more preventative measures available to help fight these battles. With the advancement of new technologies, new medical techniques, procedures, and equipment are constantly being developed and improved, allowing physicians and specialist to treat many conditions that weren't possible before.

One innovation is through stem cell research, which is showing itself to be effective in fighting many medical conditions. The extraction of cord blood (from the placenta or umbilical cord of a newborn child) is one new medical practice being established for its potential to fight many specific diseases and medical conditions. Cord blood is now being kept by public, non-profit, and private facilities in order to be used in transplants and other donor situations where the cells can be used against life-threatening diseases and afflictions.
